Happy New Year!

Saying goodbye to 2012 is a bit bittersweet. I'm always ready to welcome a new year, but 2012 was particularly perfect for me.  It will always be the year I married Tristan. It will always be the year we were surrounded by the people we are closest to and took a vow for forever. Doesn't get much better than that.

My resolutions for 2013 include taking more walks, eating more vegetables and TRYING to keep my closet neat. OH and getting the children's book I am working on published!

Wishing you all a happy, healthy and memorable 2013!

12 Dates of Christmas continues... Dates 7 & 8!

Date  7 was a much needed relaxing night in. We had a movie night staring The Dark Night and mugs of  Movie Night by Davids Tea, one of our favorite.  We were so exhausted that we will need to rewatch the movie, because neither of us had an attention span, like at all. It seemed like it would be good though! And as always, the tea was delicious.

Date 8 is actually date 1, but we didn't officially give it that label until now!  We spent the first weekend of December in Boston, visiting Tristan's friend from college Rob and his wife and newborn baby. We had a great time, and on our first night there Tristan surprised me with dinner at Top of The Hub. It had an amazing view of Boston and delicious food. Check out our view…

Date 6!

For Date numero 6, Tristan planned a really great and thoughtful surprise. He signed us up for a painting class at  Painting Lounge. It's a BYOB studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn where they talk and teach your through recreations of famous paintings.  I do illustrate often, but I work primarily in collage. It has been quite awhile since I sat myself with a bunch of acryrlics and I forgot how fun it can be. It was awesome. The class is a bit like paint by numbers for adults, but in the best way possible. I can't wait to do it again.

Check out some photos we took while recreating The Scream!

Dates 4 & 5!

For date 4, I surprised Tristan with a Mixology class in soho, that used infused teas. It was something different that we've never tried and the class was really small, aka just us! It was fun, I'm glad we did it, but I'm not going to be hardcore bartending anytime soon. The restaurant, Sanctuary T, the class took place in was very cute and the food was delicious. They have a really great menu of tea cocktails, and I'm sure we will be back to try some. This class was offered by a site I found, called Course Horse.  If you're looking for something different to try, I definitely recommend browsing Course Horse.

Date 5 was the definition of festive! For about 1 month a year, a restaurant called Rolf's goes allllllll out on their holiday d├ęcor. It seriously looks and feels like you're sitting inside a Christmas tree! A few friends recommended we check it out, and so we did! It was insanely packed, but definitely really cool and I believe a Tristan & Margot annual tradition was born.

So far the 12 Dates of Christmas has been really fun. It's a great way for us to spend time together and take advantage of some of the things of the city that we wouldn't usually make time to do this time of year. We're not going to be able to get 12 dates in before Christmas. Life gets busy, I get tired!  The important part is making memories, and we're definitely doing that! What are you doing to make this holiday season special?

A wedding video!

I interrupt this streak of 12 dates of Christmas to share our wedding video! We hired Wedding Mix by Story Mix and they shipped us a few cameras and passed them out to our friends! HUGE special shout out to Chris who taped the ENTIRE ceremony! Last night was the first night I watched it in its entirety and we are so grateful to have this footage.THANK YOU! I put together this little montage with the storymix clips and our photos from the amazing Off Beat Productions.

If you're going to use Story Mix for your own big day, I highly recommend shooting as much in natural day light as possible! And bring a light for the inside shots. We have so many great moments captured, and Story Mix was great about lightening our videos as much as possible, but I thought I would pass along these words of wisdom.  It's definitely an affordable option to a wedding videographer, and I'm glad we did it!

Date 3 of 12!

Wellllll, some of you might know about my childhood obsession with the movie Annie, and how it's an obsession that I might not have ever outgrown. And some of you might even know that Tristan rented out the mansion the movie was filmed is on our wedding day for photos as a surprise to me…and now you know that for Date 3 of our 12 Dates of Christmas my husband took me to see Annie on Broadway! How cool/sweet/awesome is that? Very. Very very very.

We went out to dinner first at Sosa Borella, and Italian-Argentinian restaurant near the theater district. Then we went to the show, which was adorable! I loved it. If you have kids or a soft spot in your heart for Annie, go see it.  PLUS my friend Amy designed the styleguide for the musical. How amazing is that?

Tonight is date 4! :-)

Date 2 of 12! 12 Days of Christmas continues…

….and I'm just a bit behind on the blog coverage ;-)

I surprised Tristan with reservations at Smoke, a jazz club located about 5 blocks from our apartment! We pass this place ALL ZEE TIME and every time, Tristan mentions that one day he'd like to actually go in!
Well, I did some research on the place, and a Sunday night date was born.

I didn't really know what to expect, but I have to say- IT. WAS. AWESOME. We had so much fun we stayed for an extra set! I highly recommend this place for a date night, and you can learn more about it HERE
Also, I recommend not going on a Friday or Saturday, because there is a music fee on those nights.

Tristan is surprising me with date 3, tonight! Stay tuned…

12 Dates of Christmas! (date 1)

Last year my friend Elsie was a a newlywed and started a tradition with her husband, inspired by Rockstar Diaries. The idea is….The 12 Dates of Christmas!

Tristan and I altered it a bit to fit our schedules, so the 12 dates are not consecutive, they're spread out through December.  Also, I didn't make a cute advent calendar for them BUT I do plan on making one for next year!

Anyway, last night was Tristan's pick and the first date of our tradition. We had dinner at the location of our first date, a bar on the Upper West Side called Cleopatra's Needle. Oddly enough, we have not been back since our first date and today marks 2 months of marriage for us!

We had a great time and he surprised me with flowers. During our first date, I had texted my friend from the bathroom telling her it was going well and that I really liked him. I didn't text anyone from the bathroom this time, but good news! I still really like him :-)

So far this is a great tradition. The holiday season is so busy. Life is so busy! So it is really nice to schedule time to do special little somethings along the way.  Looking forward to the next 11 dates….I've got a special one planned for  Sunday evening.

So very thankful…

I can NOT believe it's pretty much Thanksgiving. When did that happen?  Well, it happened!

And so, without further ado, a list of some of the things that 2012 has made me thankful for:

I'm thankful for my husband- he's patient and kind and generous and funny and my best friend. I hit the jackpot, I really did. I'm so thankful for my parents and sister. I'm thankful to have a new in-law filled-family.  I'm thankful for our niece, the beautiful baby Quinn.  I'm so thankful for the dream wedding we were able to have this year. I'm thankful for the best group of friends a gal can ask for. I'm thankful for David's Tea, which I now drink nonstop daily. I'm thankful for skype, whats app, and texting. I'm thankful for friends & family coupons. I'm thankful for audiobooks. I'm thankful for KellyRipa Cat, who's becoming more and more social every day! I'm thankful for the game, DrawSomething with Friends (I'm margot531 if you want to play).  I'm thankful for soy greek yogurt.   I'm thankful to have a job where I can create every day.  I'm thankful for photoshop. I'm thankful for my eye doctor.  I'm thankful for gel manicures.

And you?

a stormy few days

…WELL…what a coupla days it has been in good ol' New York City.
I must first say we were very very lucky, as were our families, who are all safe (some still without power) but safe.  Friends of friends lost everything and are currently living in shelters all over the East Coast. It's really scary how powerful mama nature is, and how quickly everything can change.
It's crazy to think that 3 weeks ago, Tristan and I had a beautiful wedding on the Jersey Shore, and now…

Anyway, you really gotta count your blessings.

The Secret Book of Frida Kahlo

I love Frida Kahlo. I've always loved Frida Kahlo. My mom was an art teacher during my childhood, and was THE BEST at exposing my sister and I to every museum possible at a really young age. Frida became the subject of all my women's history book reports and everything and anything having to do with art history.  I even made a pop up book at some point for a school project (note to self, try to find that)!

Anywhooooo, somewhere out there in blog-o-sphere, a few months back, I came across this gorgeous cover and was PSYCHED! A  historical fiction novel about Frida!!!! Anyway, lucky for me it hit paperback in time for my honeymoon, and I read it pool and beach side in Aruba. I loved every page of it, especially how recipes were worked into the novel.  I recommend this book to all the Frida fans out there. I think if you're not a Frida fan, you might still like it, but it's definitely the bits and pieces of her real life moments that make their way into her artwork that make it interesting.

Awesome family? Awesome family!

A few months ago my Sister-in-Law Devin surprised the crowd at her wedding with an amazing Father/Daughter dance. It was incredible, and pretty soon after my dad and I were challenged by my now Father-In-Law!  The result is above, choreographed by my sister (who you can hear screaming the steps in the background hahahah)! It was so much fun and quite the workout. And thank you Adam for videoing! The hardest part, you ask? KEEPING IT A SECRET!

Words of Wisdom

Three of my closest friends in the entire universe put together the cutest speech EVER for our rehearsal dinner. The venue turned out to be louder than expected, so they saved it for right before we went down the aisle. It was beyond special, and totally perfect for me and even though it is out of character, MADE ME CRY! Anyway, I just had to share…because I love it and love them!! Watch it, it's hilarious (and sweet)!!!

Mr. & Mrs.

And just like that, Tristan & I are husband and wife! Our wedding was the most amazing, special, incredible day of my life. I'm looking forward to sharing photos now of the handmade touches I have been working on over the past year. So stay tuned!

Wednesday, October 3, 2012

It turns out wedding planning… really really fun.  It definitely tests your patience at times and can feel a bit overwhelming, BUT overall, it's amazing and I am going to miss it. You're planning this huge party with your friends and family to celebrate marrying your favorite person  in the world. I mean, what is better than that? Not much!

Friends are starting to roll in to town, last minute details are being sewn up and I've answered the question "ARE YOU NERVOUS" about 750 times today alone!  Haha, this means IT.IS.TIME!

I hear the day becomes a blur,  so I'm looking forward to taking moments to hold on to the details. I think because so much of this wedding is handmade and filled with personal touches, Tristan & I will remember lots.  This will always be the year we planned our wedding and can't even express enough gratitude for our friends and family who supported us so much during this process!

Must Reads

I decided to read The Art of Fielding because of a tweet Judy Blume wrote about how much she loved it. Isn't that how everyone gets their book recommendations?! Anyway, good ol' Judy was RIGHT. I wasn't so sure at first, being that it's about baseball, but I have to say it's one of the best books I've ever read and an absolute must-read.

I loved Little Bee which I read a few years ago, so decided to read Gold by the same author....and he did it again! This book was fantastic. I finished it yesterday and already miss it.

What are you reading lately? Any recommendations? I'm doing a book store run this weekend to pick up some honeymoon reads!

The Sun'll Come Out...

This weekend, amongst a friend's wedding, a Madonna concert, our wedding tasting, and more we were somehow able to fit in a quick stop at….wait for it….
Annie is my All. Time. Favorite. Movie. Ever. It reminds me of every good childhood memory rolled into one, especially anything having to do with my grandfather. I can recite it from start to finish, facial expressions and all.  I collect Annie memorabilia and can't see a red dress anywhere without thinking about it.  **I realize this makes me sound a bit loony/obessive/nuts but, well, now you know.**

Anywhooooo, what happened was a friend of mine casually mentioned that her college was right near my wedding venue and that happened to be where they filmed Annie. I nearly lost my mind with excitement.

So after a fantastic food tasting/meeting with my family, and tristan's family and the wedding venue caterers,  my in-laws-to-be drove us there so I could pose for a photo!!!

I think the mansion being so close to the place Tristan & I are getting married is a little wink from my grandfather from above. Dontcha think?

For anyone searching for this for their own photo op, the mansion is in West Long Branch, New Jersey on the Monmouth University campus.  The building itself is called Wilson Hall.

An Invite Story

My name is Margot Miller, and I am a Font-a-holic.  Luckily, this trait came in handy with wedding invite design.  I wasn't sure I was going to design my own invitations, but when thinking about it I realized NOT designing it would probably be more work for me. **I'm a bit on the picky side**
Luckily, I have a patient fiance who supports the fact that I love to create, and VOILA, our invitation was born.  Upon starting, the only thing I ABSOLUTELY HAD TO HAVE was letterpress printing.  Letterpress is a type of printing where blocks are literally pressed into your surface, making it feel like an indent wherever print appears. I am a designer and stare at printing types and surfaces allllll day.
Letterpress and I experienced love at first sight.

I read THIS  fantastic blog post about accessing font variants over on Pugly Pixel, one of my favorite blogs. I immediately downloaded Mishka and have been prettttty much using it nonstop since. Other fonts included in our invitation are:
KG Call Me Maybe (yes, I picked this because of the name- DON'T JUDGE)
Janda Swirly Twirly
& Comfortaa

Right before the invitation design process started, Tristan and I had a fantastic engagement photoshoot with Jimmy of Off Beat Productions and somewhere on Pinterest I had seen the idea for a photo placed in the envelope liner.  I used a few of the photos from our shoot, and created a repeat pattern to look like a photography contact sheet and had it printed and inserted. The result is my favorite detail of our invitations!

Pinterest also gave me the idea of a "Mad-Libs" RSVP card, so I design one to match our invitation aesthetic.  Reading the replies has been much more fun this way, so I'm really glad we did it!
We printed on Crane paper through Kate's Paperie. If you are in the NYC area and looking for a custom printing expert, I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend Donna at Kate's Paperie. She was a pleasure to work with and very knowledgable.

And that, my friends, is the story of our wedding invitation! I look forward to sharing more details soon soon SOON!

Is that I am very lucky. My family is the best. My friends are the best. Lucky is an understatement!

My mom & sister hosted the most beautiful & thoughtful shower of all time for me! With the help of my momager's manager Heidi they found an amazing venue called Liberty House that has a gorgeous city view. My Aunt Isabel and cousin Kate created A PURPLE CANDY BAR that was perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!! Purple snickers, purple laffy taffy, purple kisses, purple cupcakes, etc! I loved it!!!

The shower was wine themed and was complete with wine pitchers with flowers on each table and a wine wishing well! (How cool is that? SO COOL!!!)

My mom & sister read a cute panty themed poem and now I have underwear for every life occasion to come! It was hilarious and so much fun.

Margot-ria's (champagne sangria) was a'flowin' and my favorite ladies from near and far were there! I was blown away by how many people flew in for it, and it made the day that much more special! I was gifted a COUNTLESS amount of amazing things, that Tristan & I plan to keep and treasure forever.

Having so many people wish you well and offer their love and support all in one room, at one time, is truly amazing. It was a day I will never forget!

From the shower, we started the Bachelorette party! I wanted to do both events on the same day because so many had flown in. Seriously it wasssss the  Best. Weekend. Ever.
I'm still recovering ;-)

Next up, THE WEDDING!

Don't judge a book by it's cover…

Well, why not? I never ever ever ever understood that phrase. Perhaps this is because I went to art school and would LOVE to illustrate a book cover. Hmmmm.
Either way, I did judge Arcadia by Lauren Groff by it's cover and I'm so glad that I did. I loved this book. I loved the descriptive tone and interesting story and I loved the characters. It's the story of growing up in a commune and then moving out to the "real" world. I hope they make it into the movie and I highly recommend it if you're looking for a good read.
Next up for me is Heartburn by Nora Ephron because I never read it, and I'm still in mourning.
